The Logic of Division and Reunification: Lessons from China’s Age of Upheaval about the Price of Order

Q: In Zizhi Tongjian, the history from the Jin Dynasty (beginning in 265 CE) through the Sixteen Kingdoms and the Northern and Southern Dynasties (up to 589 CE) spans about six volumes, all filled with war and turmoil. What can be gained from reading them? Do they have relevance to the modern world, or should one skip directly to the Sui and Tang dynasties?

A: They must not be skipped. This chaotic era embodies the grand logic that “a long-divided world must unite, and a long-united world must divide.” Yet each cycle of division and reunification was not a mere repetition of chaos—it was a spiral ascent, a qualitative transformation from barbarity to civilization.

It is an epic of humanity rebuilding order from the ruins. Through the brutality and bloodshed of the “Five Barbarians” invasions, it exposes the survival strategies and moral choices of individuals and groups amid upheaval, demonstrating the historical necessity of moving from an aristocratic order to a bureaucratic one, from disunity to unification.

It enlightens us that institutional renewal often arises not in times of stability, but under the pressure of crisis and competition. This period also illustrates the resilience of culture amidst chaos, and the rationality and integrity that scholars should uphold when the world is in turmoil. It teaches us where the bottom line of civilization lies, and how ethnic integration was painfully accomplished within a dark forest of conflict.

Without understanding this history, one cannot grasp the cost of prosperity, nor the hard-earned nature of the flourishing unity of the Tang era. And without learning from the trials and errors of that age of disunion, one can never truly comprehend the labor pains of today’s struggling pursuit of Datong—the ideal of universal harmony.
