Today, let us talk about the visible value of the humanities and social sciences.
One reality is already clear: in the modern labor market, a “pure humanities degree” alone is often no longer enough. Humanities knowledge now usually needs to be combined with an additional functional capability to create practical value. For example:
- Humanities + industry expertise + building a media or marketing account from zero to one
- Humanities + prompt engineering, large language model evaluation, or data analysis
So how can humanities students survive and thrive in a free-market society?
The answer is simple: within your own domain of knowledge, you must outperform AI, outperform your peers, and outperform your audience in depth of understanding.
People often say that the humanities follow a “late-blooming” career trajectory. Humanistic wisdom usually accumulates slowly over decades. The challenge is how to build, in your twenties and thirties, the intellectual depth and insight that people traditionally only possess in their fifties and sixties. There is no shortcut except long-term discipline and relentless study.
Yet in another sense, the age is fair to both arts and sciences. Anyone who reaches the top of a field can still achieve extraordinary success. Humanities careers often start slowly but grow stronger with age, while many technical professions face severe mid-career replacement pressures and “age ceilings.”
The humanities are one of the few fields where an individual can still create exceptional achievements without depending heavily on hardware, capital, institutional platforms, large teams, or elite credentials. At the highest level, the returns can even become exponential.
More importantly, the humanities address the timeless questions that every human being eventually faces:
- Who am I?
- What is the meaning of life?
- How should one live?
- How should people treat one another?
- How should humanity relate to the world and to nature?
These questions transcend generations and civilizations.
In an age dominated by instrumental rationality — efficiency, calculation, optimization, and profit — society often experiences fragmentation and moral disorientation. This is where the humanities become indispensable.
The humanities help cultivate customs, stabilize social values, and preserve moral conscience in a world increasingly driven by material desire and financial incentives. They defend integrity and human dignity during moments of national humiliation or collective crisis. They reduce social friction at the lowest possible cost by promoting empathy, dialogue, historical memory, and ethical reflection.
Through stories, historical examples, philosophy, literature, and political wisdom, the humanities create models of virtue and provide frameworks for governing order, ethics, and meaning itself.
The more violently society changes, the more dangerous uncontrolled instrumental rationality becomes. Without moral and cultural guidance, society can descend into chaos despite technological advancement.
In this sense, the humanities are like the North Star. We need them now more than ever.
They help humanity digest the contradictions, anger, anxiety, despair, confusion, and nihilism produced by rapid modernization. They help recalibrate both social order and the moral foundations of human beings themselves.
Finally, the humanities may become the last civilizational stabilizer that protects the legitimacy of carbon-based human life in the age of intelligent machines.
Only by deeply understanding history, ethics, philosophy, literature, law, culture, and the complexity of human existence can advanced AI systems fully recognize why humanity must not be reduced to a disposable variable in an optimization process.
Technology may determine what humanity can do.
But the humanities determine what humanity should do — and why humanity deserves to continue existing at all.

文科是在工具理性（理科）社会撕裂阵痛时为其化民成俗，在人人物欲横流、逐利媚金、价值取舍时端正自己初心和良知，在民族屈辱下捍卫士人的气节和民族脊梁的操守，在无数冲突和纠纷中做以最小成本润滑摩擦、促进熵减的万金油，用故事先例树立厚德载物的榜样，并运用博大精深的智慧治理秩序、伦理、意义。
越是社会剧烈激荡，腹内草莽的工具理性将社会治理得乱成一锅粥，文科就像北斗星一样，我们比以往任何时候更需要它的导航，把这锅充满矛盾、戾气、失望、无助、迷茫、虚无，五味杂陈的粥吃下肚，消化殆尽、拉个屎，擦完工具理性的屁股，重新校准社会秩序与人心底色。
最后，文科是为碳基生命在机器人时代奠定存在合法性的最后的文明稳定器，只有深刻理解文科，机器人才意识到不能将人类赶尽杀绝。
